So I am lying here watching The Ugly Truth at almost 10am lacking any sleep (which was my plan. Last night of freedom before the parents return, I get to be as loud and obnoxious as I like as I am alone). I find myself shouting "speak fucking English!" Hmmm.
I mean clearly the actors are speaking English. Maybe it was the fact that there are Spanish subtitles across the bottom of the screen which made me more aware than ever that I can't understand every word, but the fact remains that I really can't understand every word.
I do have more trouble than most following what people are saying during films when every actor is speaking in an American accent, which is quite weird considering how much US TV trash I watch!
I am also aware that some of my friends can't understand what I say as I have spoken to them via le telephone.
Funny, interesting or boring? A little of all of them I reckon. We speak the same language and yet we still have the need to shout "speak English please".
As I said, hmmmmm.

But, haha, I recall I was at nerd camp one year with a British girl named Charlotte, and I was looking for my flashlight but trying to be quiet about it because they were banned, and we spent five minutes going back and forth with each other and me describing a flashlight and her being utterly confused. I will never forget the look of dawning comprehension on her face as she said, "Oh! You mean a torch!"
We all got a good laugh out of that one. :D
It's not just English, though. I spent some time this evening thinking about one of my college French profs. Even though for the first 25 years of her life, she hardly spoke anything but French, she went to Quebec a few years ago and was completely stymied. XD No idea what they were saying to her. Seems they understood her fine, though!
Anywho I would adore to chat with you sometime and giggle over the language barrier! Do you have Skype?

Hehe, yep, it is indeed torch. But I swear I would have known what a flashlight was :P
Funny though really isn't it? And interesting to know it's not just English that can be so completely different.
I don't have Skype I'm afraid :( I don't even have a mike on my laptop. To be honest I get scared talking on the hone anyway so it would take a massive amount of convincing to make me lol. I'll visit one day though. Big old road trip of the states and I will get everyone in there :D

Also stop illegally downloading films.

In truth I preferred Bridget Jones 2 to that pile of arse wip. I saw a Film Four advert talking about how some films are throwaway and for Sunday afternoons, and some will imprint themselves forever. The Ugly Truth was neither. It was 2 hours of some of the worst pile of shit I have ever seen. Even over Pretty Polly. Urgh *shudders*
And you want to start on the illegally downloading films? Bring it bitch :D
Do you really thing Universal studios are going to be crying into their tea because they didn't receive the few pennies they would have got if I had paid to watch it at the cinema or bought it on DVD? On the other hand I would not have been able to feed myself this week if I had paid that money.
Then there is the fact that visual quality of what I watched was dreadful. These people are constantly pushing for better picture and sound quality, and they are forever talking about it. They are not aiming their wares at me. I'm never going to be the person who pays their bills because I will rent the films I want to watch from the library or wait until they have hit the bargain basket, and then watch it on my tiny telly with my 14 pound DVD player.
On the other hand I am provided with 2 hours worth of entertainment which I am otherwise unable to afford. Those few hours take me out of myself and allow me to feel a little less depressed for a while.
I would not steal an independent film, or a film which featured people I truly respected and I knew needed every penny.
It's not like I feel good about taking without paying, if I had the money I would pay. But who is the bigger criminal? The person who rules the entertainment industry and makes a fortune without producing anything worthy of anything, or the individual sat in her home so desperate for company she risks prosecution just to take herself out of it for a while?
In short, no.

Really just skip it. It's obvious what's going to happen from the beginning and the bits inbetween...well I don't remember them which is never a good sign.
